obama has unveiled the most sweeping proposals for curbing gun violence in two decades. jacqueline fell joins us live from our d.c. bureau with the proposed changes and a battle with the nra involving the president's children. jacqueline? >> reporter: well, the congressman nancy pelosi is calling the plan clear and concrete steps to tackle gun violence. however, she knows the president's plan will be a big lift split ceam. >> this is our -- politically. >> this is our first task as a society, keeping our children safe. >> reporter: president obama is asking congress to act quickly. with shooting victims and families of those who have been killed in the front row, obama proposed mandatory background checks for all gun purchases, a ban on military style assault weapons and magazines holding more than 10 rounds and stricter penalties on gun trafficking. >> if there's even one life that can be saved, then we've got an obligation to try. >> reporter: the president's plan calls for more school resource officers, counselors and better access to mental health care. he's urging americans demand
